The Classroom

All of the classrooms in Uncommon School buildings are named after Colleges (U of Michigan, Yale, Harvard). The students bond with their college right away, and are often seen and heard talking about how they can not wait to go that college one day. It puts the college bound into the students from day one.

A Teacher's Day at an Uncommon School

A Teacher's Day...

During a Free Prep or Lunch teachers are often...

*Tutoring Students to get them on the fast track to college

*Having students make up missed tests or classwork to keep them on track

*Practicing expectations set by the school to make sure there is success in each student.

*Developing lesson plans and unit plans which are rigorous and College-Bound.

In the classroom a Teacher is ...

*Always moving and observing the students

*Thinking aloud, allowing students to break down and listen to thinking

*Checking over work students have done, and accomplished

*Helping students who are in need

*Making sure students are being College Bound by meeting classroom Expectations.

A Student's Day at an Uncommon School

A Student's Day...

  • An earlier start-time than most public schools.
    • Our students need to make  gains in reading and math, among other subjects, in order to be college-ready. We extend the school day because at Uncommon, more time in school means more learning typically extended till 330pm for all students.

  • A school leader is waiting to shake hands with students as they arrive, while they come into the school as well as into the classroom.
    • They believe it's important for students to know that every day, we are glad to see them, and we are excited for what they will achieve during the school day.

  • Breakfast
    • The majority of Uncommon students qualify for free or reduced-price meals.

  • Literacy
    • From Kindergarten through 12th grade, we place a huge emphasis on literacy. As our young students move from "learning to read" to "reading to learn", and as our older students transition from comprehension into to deep textual analysis, we keep our eye on college as the goal.

  • Math
    • Most Uncommon schools devote twice the time to math than local district schools. Math procedures and problem-solving skills are vital to the development of critical thinking skills, and they unlock access to many careers such as Engineering.

  • Lunch
    • We maintain tight processes around everything from lunch lines for food distribution to entering and exiting bench tables. What results is a full lunch period reserved for fueling up for the afternoon's lessons. Most lunches are done silently so students get the food in their stomaches, and are still ready for afternoon classes

  • Physical Education
    • Many Uncommon schools provide physical education, it ranges from once a week to daily. We believe it's important for students to have the opportunity to move, to collaborate, to compete, and to re-charge recess is also offered in the lower elementary level (K-3).

  • Subject Area Classes
    • Uncommon schools teach a range of courses in history, science, and the arts. History and Science are taught every other semester, one semester History the next Science.

  • Music/Art
    • Many Uncommon schools provide music and art classes as a core component of the weekly schedule. Classes include violin, guitar, chorus, keyboard, and general music education. We value music as a disciplined and creative pursuit that will benefit students throughout their lives.

  • Dismissal
    • It's important to end the day on the right foot, because we'll all be together again tomorrow, working toward the same goal of college. Our schools have very structured dismissal procedures that allow for smooth transitions from classrooms to the sidewalk to buses. Adults are saying goodbye to students, providing positive reinforcement  and encouraging them on tonight's homework assignment.
